Prayers for the days that are hard

The Bible does not tell anxious people to cheer up. A third of the Psalms are complaints, Jesus sweated in a garden, and Elijah asked to die. You are allowed to bring God the truth. Find where you are below.

If you are in danger right now

These prayers sit alongside real help — never instead of it. If you are thinking about ending your life or hurting yourself, tell someone today: a parent, a teacher, a pastor, or your local emergency number. In the US and Canada call or text 988. In the UK and Ireland call 116 123 (Samaritans). Elsewhere, find your local line at findahelpline.com. Asking for help is a faithful thing to do.

When anxiety will not switch off

Racing thoughts, tight chest, dread about something you cannot control.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

A prayer

Father, my mind will not slow down. I keep rehearsing things I cannot control and it is wearing me out. I am giving you the specific thing I am afraid of — you already know it. I cannot make myself feel calm, so I am asking you for the peace you promise, the kind that does not depend on knowing how this ends. Stay with me tonight. Steady my breathing. Remind me that you are holding what I cannot. Amen.

And then, today

  • Name the fear out loud or on paper — vague dread shrinks when it gets specific.
  • Pray one verse rather than many; repeat Philippians 4:6-7 slowly as you breathe.
  • Anxiety is not a sin or a lack of faith. Elijah, David and Jesus in Gethsemane all felt crushing distress.
  • Tell one real person today. Then, if it keeps going, tell a doctor or counsellor — that is wisdom, not weakness.

When you feel nothing, or everything is heavy

Numbness, exhaustion, no motivation, faith that feels dead.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18

A prayer

God, I do not feel you, and I am tired of pretending. Getting through today is all I have. I do not have words or energy, so I am borrowing the psalmist's: you are near to the brokenhearted. Be near to me even when I cannot sense it. Give me enough for the next hour. Send me someone. Keep me here. Amen.

And then, today

  • Feeling nothing is not the same as God being absent. Faith is trust, not a mood.
  • Do the smallest next thing: water, food, daylight, one message sent.
  • Read the Psalms — roughly a third of them are complaints, and God kept them in the book.
  • Depression responds to treatment. Talk to a parent, a doctor or a counsellor. God works through medicine and therapy as surely as through prayer.

When you hate yourself

Shame, self-criticism, comparison, feeling like a disappointment.

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Psalm 139:14

A prayer

Jesus, the voice in my head is cruel and it sounds like the truth. I have been measuring myself against people I will never be. You made me on purpose and you say I am worth dying for — please make that louder than my own verdict. Teach me to see myself the way you do: honestly, and with love. Amen.

And then, today

  • Your worth is fixed by the cross, not by your performance, your body or your follower count.
  • Fast from the accounts that make you hate your life for one week and watch what changes.
  • Speak to yourself the way you would speak to a friend in your position.
  • If self-hatred turns into self-harm, tell an adult today and get real help.

When you have lost someone

Death, bereavement, the ache that comes in waves.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more.
Revelation 21:4

A prayer

Lord, I miss them. It comes out of nowhere and takes my legs out. You wept at a grave, so I know grief does not offend you. Hold me while this hurts. Keep the promise that death is not the end and that you are making all things new. Until then, help me get through today. Amen.

And then, today

  • Jesus cried at Lazarus's tomb knowing he would raise him — grief and faith belong together.
  • There is no timetable. Waves are normal months and years later.
  • Say their name. Keep talking about them with people who loved them too.
  • Grief that becomes despair or numbness that will not lift deserves a counsellor's help.

When you feel completely alone

New school, no close friends, feeling unseen or left out.

It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you.
Deuteronomy 31:8

A prayer

Father, I am lonely, and pretending otherwise is exhausting. You say you never leave — help me feel that, and also send me people. Give me the courage to make the first move instead of waiting to be chosen. Make me the friend I am hoping to find. Amen.

And then, today

  • Loneliness lies: it tells you nobody wants you, then stops you from asking.
  • Make the first move once this week — a message, an invitation, sitting with someone new.
  • A local church is the easiest place to find people who will keep showing up.
  • The community room on this site is moderated and safe. Post there when the house is quiet.

A prayer for a panic attack

Right now, mid-panic. Read one line at a time.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
Psalm 56:3

A prayer

Jesus. Help. // You are here. // I am safe. // Breathe in. Breathe out. // This will pass. // You are still holding me. // Amen.

And then, today

  • Slow the out-breath: in for four, out for six. Panic peaks and then falls — always.
  • Name five things you can see. It pulls your mind back into the room.
  • Say the name of Jesus on each breath if you have no other words.
  • Frequent panic attacks are treatable. Tell someone and get help.

When you keep falling into the same thing

Addiction, porn, self-destructive habits, the cycle of shame.

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape.
1 Corinthians 10:13

A prayer

Lord, I have promised to stop and I have broken that promise again. I am not asking you to make me feel better about it — I am asking you to change me. Show me the exit before I am in too deep. Give me someone to be honest with. Thank you that you have not given up on me, even now. Amen.

And then, today

  • Shame keeps the cycle going; confession breaks it. Tell one trustworthy person.
  • Change the conditions, not just the intentions: filters, no phone in bed, different route home.
  • Failure does not cancel forgiveness. Get up the same day, not next Monday.
  • Addiction usually needs help beyond willpower. Ask for it.

Praying for a friend who is struggling

Someone you love is depressed, self-harming or in crisis.

Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2

A prayer

God, I am scared for them and I do not know what to say. Hold them tonight where I cannot reach. Send them help, real help. Give me words that land, patience when there is no progress, and the courage to tell an adult if they are in danger. Amen.

And then, today

  • Listen far more than you advise. 'That sounds really hard' beats a Bible verse thrown too early.
  • Keep showing up — consistency matters more than the perfect sentence.
  • Never keep a secret that could cost someone their life. Tell a trusted adult.
  • You are not their therapist. Loving them well includes getting professionals involved.
