Finding and Joining a Church

What to look for, what to ignore, and how to survive the first visit.

What actually matters

Is the Bible taught faithfully? Is Jesus central rather than the personality up front? Are people cared for, especially the poor and the awkward? Is there accountability and financial transparency? Would a struggling person be safe here?

What matters less than you think

Music style, building age, dress code, screen quality, average congregation age. These shape the experience but not the substance. Do not choose a church the way you choose a playlist.

Warning signs

A leader who cannot be questioned. Pressure about money. Secrecy. Shaming people who leave. Teaching that God guarantees wealth or health. Any of these is a reason to walk away and tell someone.

Give it more than one Sunday

Visit three times before deciding — first visits are always awkward. Say yes to one conversation. Belonging usually starts in a midweek group rather than the main service.
